Goodrich Community Primary School

Geography

Subject Vision

We have a bespoke Geography curriculum at Goodrich that is linked to our local community and the area around the school.

Our Geography curriculum aims to deepen the children’s understanding of the world around them in terms of the physical and human geography; the environment, the space and the sense of place. We want the children to interpret the processes that shape their world and to understand the interconnectivity between these different areas.

We strive to encourage curiosity through practical fieldwork, that will lead to the creation of lifelong learners. There is a particular focus on map work at Goodrich, with a strong foundation in the acquisition of knowledge and the skills needed to apply that knowledge to investigations about the local area and the wider world.

This includes locational knowledge (e.g. using compass directions in Years 2 and 3, understanding scale in Year 4, exploring map contours in Year 5, before the children focus on digital mapping in Year 6).

We also further embed a sense of place by comparing and contrasting England and Jamaica in Year 2 and investigating the relationships between urban and rural environments in Year 4.
